WHO WE ARE
Carter Thor Studio
We’re happy to have you on our website! Check out the writings, transcripts, audio, and video – all of this is for you, the actor! The Studio exists for The Actor – spend some time with us and grow!
Welcome to Carter Thor Studio,
My partner Alice Carter and I created The Studio as a community. We want this website to be an extension of that community. The audio, video, and written word lessons you find here are yours to use and grow with! We may meet you someday here in Los Angeles, or at one of our seminars across the country, but before we meet in person we hope you take what you like from this site and use it to make communities of your own.
These teachings are only a small example of what we have created with actors over the last two decades. We want to share this with you so you can share it with the actors you know and see what kinds of communities evolve.
As important as the ideas are that we teach at The Studio it is who we are and the nature of our community that makes those ideas work. There is no secret formula, no five, six, or twelve step process that will guarantee your success in the highly competitive world working as an actor in film and television. There are, however, some practices, some principles, and the paradigm shift that they bring, that will give you a fighting chance. Some that we teach are time honored and have worked for generations; some are new and are proprietary to The Studio – you will only find them here.
My teacher Roy London used to say that, “he couldn’t keep his eyes off a person who was changing.” Roy was a genius; he was right about change, he rightly avoided systems and methods that made concrete the most fluid of all the arts; the art of performance. While being careful to honor The Method and all that is has brought to the art of acting today we have to open our eyes to the fact that things have changed: Acting is of the moment, in the moment, at the moment. This has always been so, and now the marriage of the Art of Film and the Art of Acting has created a dynamic form of expression; one where timeless practice meets new and changing modern filmmaking disciplines.
This is what our community is dedicated to practicing at The Studio; the lifestyle of a film actor.
Like any life changing process this requires dedication. It can seem like hard work at times but really if you are following your life’s dream regardless of how many hours you may put in, is it ever really, “work”? In a world where so many people wake up and don’t even know what they desire, you are purposefully chasing your dream. You are surrounded by other working professionals creating entertainment in the capitol of film and television. The joy of a life that has purpose can hardly be described. But you know what I’m talking about or you would never have found this site, and if what I say here rings true for you; then I hope that you have also found your creative home.
As you click forward in the site you will find numerous examples of what we do and how we do it; the class structures, the instructors, the philosophy’s, our guests, our alumni, and our beautiful theater that is yours to use. You will find, in other words, the actors life. We welcome you and hope you are here to stay. Our ideas have been built on decades close study of the actor and their craft and how it relates to the new art of film, but our underlying principle is a simple one …
That the world is a simple minded and generous place; it will give you more of what you already are: Spend your time waiting for a break and you will be a waiter. Spend your time practicing the art of entertainment and you will not only find out exactly with what voice you speak, but you will be giving the world a chance to give you more of what you already do – what you were born to do; to entertain us with your acting and to earn a living doing it.
I’m so glad that you are here, so glad that you have found what works - So glad that to have found a place that makes the kind of creative pressure that turns actors into artists and artists into successful professionals!
