HOW TO START STUDYING
To become a part of the Carter Thor Studio you must audit one
of Camerons class. (call to set up a reserved time) You will then be placed in the appropriate class
when a space becomes available.
Auditor space is limited due to high demand and are scheduled two months in advance, so it may take a little while before you
can get one.
If you are a right fit for the studio, you will be contacted when a space
opens up in the appropriate class.
Class size is maintained under 30 students.
The studio is not set up like a "course," it is a process. Everyone
starts in Shane Steven's class to introduce and familiarize
you with the language, format and tools of the studio. When these concepts
start to be consistently integrated into your work, you will be moved
into Cameron or Alice's classes. Our requirement that you pass through these
classes is not to disregard or disrespect your personal experience or
training, rather it is to insure that everyone begins this journey on
the same path and with the same intention.
Call the Admin office 818.760.9426 to schedule an audit time.
Audit Fee $30
WAIT LIST--Because of our extensive wait list, the Carter
Thor Studio is pleased to offer an Auditing Program*. For half the monthly
cost of class, you may audit any and all classes you like, as much as
you like. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to be a
part of our learning, creative environment.
To book your space and begin your next step as a more successful actor
and artist, please contact the Admin office today at 818.760.9426.
*Please note that the Auditing Program does not give you
priority on the waiting list, eligibility to work in class or perform
in any productions at the studio.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
SCENE STUDY
Our goal is to familiarize you with the language, intention, and tools of script analysis so that you will utilize them actively and aggressively in your scene study and ultimately easily and effortlessly in your professional work. You will explore and exercise tools such as goal, action, obstacle, inner object, substitution (triggers), inner monologue, doings, place, fourth wall, previous circumstance, and playable action.
The emphasis in our scene study classes is developing skills for film
acting. Teachers choose
scenes for partners from a large library of film scripts
according to the tools, skills, and areas each individual may be developing.
Each scene is presented in two works for the lesson of the scene to be
learned. In the first work, the actors present the scene without interruption
and are given notes and observations to take away, work on and rehearse.
In the second work, the teacher will stop and start the scene to make
adjustments where needed as it goes along.
Five to six scenes are presented in each class. Depending on class size you can expect to work on average about every other week. You should be prepared to work every week, but understand there may be times when three weeks may go by. A rotating roster is kept by the class monitor to insure fair participation for everyone in the class.
It is essential to be present for all of the classes, not just when you are scheduled to go up. Your participation, perseverance, and growth is universal. You are all teachers for one another. The instructor is the facilitator of your progress and is responsible for deepening and strengthening the knowledge and practice of your work. You are responsible for your motivation and commitment, and growth.
ON CAMERA
This advanced class combines scene study with camera technique. Scenes are assigned, but not rehearsed. The idea is to recreate the dynamic of the set in the class room. Alice directs the actors for two cameras and the work is taped to look at later. Each student is also requested to find a "role of evolution", several scenes from the same script, to work on creating an arc of a character through an entire story in addition to a particular scene. Participation in the on camera class is per Alice and Cameron's approval.
