classes
The Carter Thor Studio believes that in the art of individual expression it is the individual that matters.
All classes are taught by the founding partners of the Studio: Alice Carter or Cameron Thor. Billy Scott teaches the Teen Class and does so in concert with Cameron and Alice.
Once you make the decision to become a part of the Studio we spend time with you to discuss what your dreams are, your hopes, your experiences and your challenges. It takes time to do it this way. Our system is not a cookie cutter approach; one book, one technique, will not work for every actor. Only together can we find the class that is best suited for you.
Our classes …
-Scene Study: The Studio’s focus is on film and television acting; to do this our core work is scene study. With our extensive library of scenes from film, television, and modern plays, our scene study classes are lively and set-like; with an active and exciting format that prepares the actor for the give and take world of film sets. Anyone interested in joining The Studio will audit a class to see how it works; the classes are better seen then explained. It’s wild and it works.
-On Camera: In a small and intense format, The Studio uses two cameras to teach the actor how to live in within the frame. This is not a single camera class, “showing you how you look”. This class, taught by film and theater director Alice Carter teaches the student what really changes the frame when the actor enters it. It’s not how much you know, but how you live with what you know. These classes are tightly focused on film acting; teaching the actor about all the supporting disciplines on a movie set.
-Teen Class: This class, taught by Billy Scott, introduces the teen actors to The Studio’s concepts. **With scene study and exercises, it is a unique format for Young Actors. We wanted to create a place where a young actor could grow without being overexposed to a “style” that is popular on many youth oriented shows, but that may limit many young actors ability to grow into successful adults. You will find more detailed information about The Carter Thor Studio Young People’s Workshop elsewhere on the site.
-Invitation Only: There are a small number of classes at the Studio that are invitation only. These are not master classes but tighter and more focused groups. They are something to strive for when joining.
-Special Events: At the Studio we have a regular roster of special guests and workshops. Many of these are simply a part of being a Studio Member. Take advantage of them, they are only open to current members and our list of guests and workshops is truly remarkable. You will see more information about them here on the site.
-Our Philosophy:
We do not have a techniques or a system, we believe that these things limit and comfort the actor at a time in their life that they need to be expanded and challenged.
We base our classes and the instruction on an organic premise we call the “Three P’s - Principles, Practice, and Paradigm.” Simply put, an actor’s life is based on a limited set of principles. In every role that we play in our lives; as sons and daughters, parents and grandparents, employee’s and employers, etc., we live by principles. Some are learned by hard trial and error, some come as naturally as taking a breath.
To understand the value of a principle in one of your life’s roles, try telling a lie to the one you love. You will find that to be honest and trustworthy is a key principle to a healthy relationship. Principles govern human affairs.
Over twenty years of study I have found that the actor has a list of seven principles that are most dominate in their lives. An actor will find that when they live by these principles, practice them in their acting and in their daily affairs – they see a very real and important shift in their paradigm.
We keep our program simple. A simple program practiced by complex people creates successful results.
